Connected Kitchen
CHALLENGE
As global sales of smart kitchen products look likely to hit 25 million units by 2023, huge opportunities for brands working in retail, appliance and AI technologies exist.
Major advances with the Samsung Family Hub and LG ThinQ as well as cross industry trends such as Amazon Dash, Alexa, Hue and Bixi have disrupted the kitchen space.
BSH (Bosch, Siemens, Gaggenau and Neff) with its Home Connect service and Miki kitchen assistant, looked to integrate some of these services and push its own to out strip Samsung and Google.
SOLUTION
Working directly with the client we pushed through three key sprint phases to discover, define and design a white box solution for the multiple brands at BSH.
We looked at cross-industry trends and best practices, exploratory user testing workshops in both Germany and China (their largest market), defined personas and interaction journeys and built an interactive UX / UI design system and showcase.
Several key findings were taken forward from the initial stages to inform the designs:
The mobile device is the centre of all activity
Focus on the right type of interaction at the right moment
Personalisation and customisation at every stage
Displays are still the main medium for interaction
Create an experience for all the senses
Add services that support the cooking and inspiration process
These findings led to a living guide that hightlighted the golden rules and interaction processes of each brand.
The principles themselves led to a ‘Show don’t tell’ approach, showcasing the key feature screens that help visualise the guidelines and the creation of a full-size prototype kitchen at Cap Gemini HQ in Poland.
